Mary Josephine Smardzewski

Funeral mass for Mary Josephine Smardzewski, age 85 of Bloomington, Indiana will be Saturday January 16, 2021 at 10 AM (Visitation 9:30 AM in the chapel) at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, 38750 Ryan Road, Sterling Heights, Michigan 48310. Fr. Anthony Sulkowski will officiate. Burial will take place privately at Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
Mary passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Bloomington Indiana after her long battle with Parkinson’s disease and then contracting Covid-19.  She was born on June 15, 1935 in Hamtramck, Michigan to Theresa and Julius Kolomycki. She had one sister, Delphine Soultanian. She was married to Joseph Smardzewski for 40 years. Mary is survived by her daughter, Chris DiBartolomeo of Troy, Michigan and son, John Smardzewski of Solsberry, Indiana. In addition, she is survived by her son in-law Michael DiBartolomeo of Troy Michigan, ex-Daughter in-law Monica Denboer of Martinsville Indiana, grandchildren Matthew DiBartolomeo, Mitchell Smardzewski, and Katarina Smardzewski, nieces Robin Newman and Debra Alexanian.

Mary supported many students as the Dietetic Internship Director at both Harper Hospital and Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and was an active member of the American Dietetic Association.  She graduated from Dominican High School and Marygrove College. Mary lived with her family in Rochester, Michigan for most of her life, then moved with her husband Joseph to Troy, Michigan. After Joe’s passing, Mary moved to Sterling Heights, Michigan. She then moved to Bloomington, Indiana to live with her son John.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and orders from the Governor's Office face masks must be worn and proper social distancing is required.
