Carl R. Jones, Sr.
Carl R. Jones, Sr., of Nitro, West Virginia and St. Cloud, Florida passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017, just three days short of his 89th birthday.
Carl was born in 1928 in Dundon, West Virginia to Charles Edgar Jones and his wife, Anna Marie (Hammersmith). He graduated from Charleston High School and later married Anna Mae “Pat” (Hook) who, after 65 years of loving togetherness, preceded him in death in May 2014.
Following 25 years of dedicated service he retired from Union Carbide Corporation in 1977.
Carl was a social man with many years of active service in the Loyal Order of the Moose. He served in all the offices of the Nitro Moose Lodge, including three consecutive terms as Governor. Following his tenure as Governor he oversaw the building of a new Lodge in Hickory, North Carolina. He was Administrator there throughout this project. In 1986, at Mooseheart, he was awarded the highest of Order honors, the Pilgrim Degree of Merit.
An avid enthusiast of stock car and drag racing, he enjoyed watching and attending NASCAR races, and participating in local drag racing in West Virginia and Ohio. In 1970, he led his team to win their class at the AHRA World Championship drag race at Bristol, Tennessee. In 2015, he was inducted into the West Virginia Drag Racers Hall of Fame.
A wonderful family man, loving husband and father, Carl is survived by his son, Carl R. “Ron” Jones, Jr. and his daughter Carol Elaine Jones Pompa (spouse Frank); granddaughter Amber and great grandson, Antonio as well as granddaughter Sharon and great granddaughter Jessica.
He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association.
